A ninot is a figure forming part of a falla. It may portray a character or take part in a scene with other figures. Scale helps explain the distinction: a ninot is a piece, while the falla is the complete monument.
A word for looking at the figures
The Spanish DLE dictionary records the word as coming from Catalan ninot. In Valencian fiesta vocabulary you will find it on signs, at exhibitions and in explanations of monuments. It is useful to keep the original term: this is an artwork with a role in a larger composition.
When looking at a scene, notice what the figures are doing, how they interact and what the accompanying texts say. The humour may lie in a gesture or need a reference to current affairs. An isolated photograph does not always capture that meaning.
What indultat means
A ninot indultat is a figure spared from the fire. Valencia’s Fallas Museum collection brings together figures from large and children’s fallas that have been saved, alongside other records of the fiesta. They allow you to see part of a monument that is no longer in the street.
Indultat describes the piece’s fate. It does not mean that the whole falla is preserved, or that any prize-winning figure automatically receives the same treatment.
From workshop to museum
The Guild of Fallas Artists Museum displays figures, sculptural groups, sketches and models. Looking at those materials helps explain how work begins well before public display.
Museums have another role: they let you see figures outside fiesta week, with time to study their construction and changing styles. For a visit, check the centre’s current arrangements.
Alicante and the Vinalopó
In Alicante, ninot is also used for figures within fogueres, while in Elda the term belongs to the town’s own Fallas. The monuments and calendars differ; the idea of a figure within a scene helps make sense of both celebrations. Before visiting an exhibition or a ninot parade, check exactly which event the programme is announcing.
If a visit to the ninots is part of a committee outing, you can bring everyone together for a meal afterwards. Explore our local fiesta catering and request a group quote, specifying where the visit ends and where you would like everyone to gather.
