Easter Monday: is it a public holiday?
Easter Monday: is it a public holiday?
Easter Monday is a public holiday in the Valencian Community and it is also the one that moves around the calendar the most: some years it falls at the end of March and others well into April. Here is which day it falls on, why it changes and where else it is a day off, with the official regulation behind each fact.
Easter Monday, a regional public holiday
Yes: it is a regional public holiday in the Valencian Community. It is set every year by the decree of the Consell (the regional government) approving the working calendar, and the BOE (the Official State Gazette) includes it in its annual resolution. In 2026 it was Monday 6 April (Decree 100/2025) and in 2027 it is Monday 29 March (Decree 42/2026). As Good Friday is a national public holiday and Maundy Thursday is not one here, Valencian Holy Week leaves four days in a row, from Friday to Monday.
Why the date changes
Easter moves every year, and the Monday with it. Easter Sunday was on 5 April in 2026 and will be on 28 March in 2027; the next ones fall on 16 April 2028, 1 April 2029 and 21 April 2030, according to the tables of Easter dates. That is why you cannot rely on the previous year: Easter Monday 2027 arrives eight days earlier than the 2026 one, and the 2028 one will move to 17 April. The same goes for everything that depends on Holy Week in the Alicante area, from the processions to the Santa Faz.
Where else is it a public holiday?
It is the question people search for most. Reading the columns of the BOE annex, in 2026 it was a public holiday in the Balearic Islands, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Navarre, the Basque Country, La Rioja and the Valencian Community. In 2027, in the Balearic Islands, Catalonia, Navarre, the Basque Country, La Rioja and the Valencian Community. The other regions have Maundy Thursday and Good Friday off, and work on the Monday. The BOE’s note for 2027 adds that in the Aran Valley the 29 March holiday is replaced by 17 June.
The second Easter Monday
A week later comes the second Easter Monday, which the DOGV (the regional official gazette) also records as “lunes de San Vicente” (that is what Monòver calls it). It is not regional: some municipalities choose it as a local holiday for their St Vincent Ferrer fiesta. In 2026 it fell on 13 April, and Novelda registered it in the DOGV as “Segundo Lunes de Pascua”. You will find the full explanation under St Vincent Ferrer.
Lunch at home
Valencia Bonita gives it as the day to go out in a group to eat the mona: here is the mona de Pascua recipe. With four days off, the Monday is a good day for a long meal at home. If you want the paella to arrive ready, see our paella delivery or get a quote with the date and the number of guests. We cook from Aspe, in the catering in Aspe and the Vinalopó area.
Other Valencian public holidays
The rest of the year is in the Valencian Community public holidays calendar, along with the other dates people search for a lot: 19 March and 9 d’Octubre. Everything is in the fiesta calendar.
If you want to bake another Holy Week bun besides the mona, the panquemado has two rises and bakes at 200 °C, and you can make it on any day.
